In November South Pool were awarded with a certificate as runner-up in the Best Kept Village Devon Competition 2011. The village achieved a score of 96 out of a possible 100. The competition is run by the Campaign to Protect Rural Englad
The Gullet Farm Estate has been working closely with the RSPB regarding the conservation of hedge row enviroment. The results of the first year have been spectacular with the latest RSPB survey returning 51 species 7 of those species; Cirl Bunting, Herring Gull, House Sparrow, Linnet, Skylark, Song Thrush & Yellowhammer being on the RSPB red list (species of high conservation concern) Three Barn Owl Boxes have recently been purchased in conjunction with the Barn Owl Trust.
On the 5th August the BBC came to South Pool to film an episode of Country File. TV presenters Claire Balding & Matt Baker were challenged to a carab meat competition to pick out the best meat by weight and the speed they could perform this task. This was followed by a race (an ancient tradition) of rolling crab pots down the street. Matt Baker also explored the Estuary by Canadian canoe discovering the estuarys hidden treasures.
A Veg Shed has recently become available in the village it is no bigger than a small wardrobe and is always open. It relies on an honesty box for those who wish to buy local produce, fruit, veg, eggs sausages & bacon. The Veg Shed is situated by The Millbrook Inn.
